Sugar Sammy picked as Quebec's comedian of the year
Sugar Sammy has impressed audiences with his unilingual, bilingual, and quadrilingual comedy shows over the past year.
Now he's been honoured with a pair of awards at the 15th annual Olivier prize ceremony, including being chosen by the public as Quebec's star of the year.
Sugar Sammy's show En Francais SVP won the award for best comedy performance of the year -- but it was actually the only one of his many shows debuted last year which was eligible.
As Sugar Sammy (real name: Samir Khullar) picked up the award, he thanked his allo- and anglophone audience with several words in English "Guys, I'm in! Time to take over."
The Olivier ceremony, which honours Quebec comedians who perform in French, does not award prizes to comedy shows which are bilingual, such as Sugar Sammy's constantly sold-out You're Gonna Rire.
But the award for star of the year is chosen by the public based on voting online and via telephone during the ceremony itself.
Other comedic award-winners include the duo Les Denis Drolet for their show 'Comme du Monde,' and the newcomer of the year award went to Adib Alkhalidey.
Witnesses at the Charbonneau commission were also up for the Funny Despite Themselves award. Also chosen by the public, the people of Quebec selected Nicolo Milioto as the most ridiculous public figure of the past year.
