Me and Russell are very different
Indo-Canadian stand-up comedian Sugar Sammy on what he has in store for India.
Stand up comedian Sugar Sammy aka Samir Khullar, who will be performing for the first time in India this week, thinks that the similarity between him and Russell Peters stem out of the fact that they both come from the same place. “We are both Indo-Canadians who grew up in Canada. So naturally we share the same cultural spaces and tradition which is why our jokes might sound similar”, says Sammy who further adds that there is still a lot that is different between the two of them. “I have done my show in French, Punjabi and Hindi, and as far as I know, he hasn't done it in different languages,” he says. The 37-year old counts American stand-up comedian and actor Eddie Murphy as one of his major influences. “I saw Delirious for the first time when I was eight. And that's when I decided that this is what I have to do. I loved everything about him, his swagger, confidence and the fact he filtered out nothing. He spoke what he wanted to,” Sammy says.
He will be performing in India under Comedy Central India Sugar Sammy Tour. “My favourite Hindi film of all time would be Namak Halal and yes, Amitahh Bacchan is my favourite actor. He just oozes confidence on screen and he knows what he is doing”, gushes Sammy who further mentions that he adapts to his audiences while performing for them. “I improvise and adapt as per my audience,” Sammy says, who warns that he will be making pre-marital sex jokes during his show.
