Multilingual Montreal comic Sugar Sammy took home two prestigious Olivier comedy awards Sunday (May 12), including the Olivier de l'année for his show You're Gonna Rire (laugh).

The Olivier de l'année was voted on by the pubic during the gala award show Sunday night. Earlier in the evening he had won an Olivier for best humour show of the year.

Les Oliviers celebrate the best in humour in the predominantly French-speaking province of Quebec. This was the award show's 15th annual edition.

Sugar Sammy was nominated in three categories for writing, for show of the year, and the Olivier of the year. The first two are for his French-only show En Français SVP! (In French Please!).

A year ago the Montreal Gazette's Bill Brownstein wrote: “Sugar Sammy is going where few performers, on either side of the linguistic divide, dare to tread in this province. He has thrown caution to the wind in undertaking a bilingual spectacle, wherein he will be meshing French and English shtick together, sometimes even in the same sentence.”

And as the awards confirm, that daring has won him audiences throughout the province.

In March he presented an English/French/Hindi/Punjabi comedy show for his hometown fans in Montreal.
