SAMMY KHULLAR IS SUGAR SAMMY

2007-12-18

(Toronto – December 18, 2007) – A sensation straight out of Montreal, with a rapidly growing national and international fan base, Sugar Sammy can now be heard on his first CD, Down With The Brown, scheduled to drop January 3rd, 2008.

Sammy uses impeccable timing to drive home his frank observational humour, and a worldview honed from the widely-shared “Westernized ethnic” experience. Throughout the CD, he riffs on subjects like arranged marriage, his Indian ancestry and the ever-changing multicultural society in which he lives.

Down With The Brown is true to that form, a series of clips of Sammy working nightclub crowds in Ottawa. This gives the listener a front-row-of-the-club experience, the closest you'll come to feeling Sugar Sammy's electricity without actually being in the crowd.

“It's a collection of some of my favourite bits with some great improv moments with the crowd,” says Sammy, “and I'm very proud of it. Right now we've printed a limited 1st Edition, only 2000 copies. They're for my hardcore fans and are only going to be on sale during this tour. Once they're gone….they're gone. The regular print will be released in more massive quantities later on but will be slightly different.

Speaking of which, his cutting-edge humour can be seen live as Sammy embarks on a national tour this winter to celebrate the launch of this CD. Landing in Vancouver in January, Sammy will work his way back to Montreal, playing clubs and touring the CD throughout the provinces. The CD will be available for sale after his sets, where you can meet Sammy up close and personal.

This ever-evolving artist exploded on the comedy scene in Montreal five years ago and hasn't looked back. He has traveled the world, performing in South Africa, Dubai, Ireland and the U.K. He has performed in the Hollywood Comedy Festival in Los Angeles, the Capetown Comedy Festival in South Africa and has been a headliner at Montreal's legendary Just For Laughs Festival three years in a row. In 2007, he headlined the national Just For Laughs-sponsored Ethnic Heroes of Comedy tour in theatres across Canada.

His most recent jump toward “player” status came with his stint as a hand-picked opener for comedian Dave Chappelle. Now comes a compilation of his best punchlines that will leave the listeners begging for more.
